Drain Collapsed since March, residents worried about sinkholes and dengue

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: A collapsed drain that has been an issue since March at Regat Jupiter, Taman Star near Kampung Simee, is causing significant worry among residents.

Residents claim that it has led to stagnant waters in the area; contributing to a rise in dengue fever cases.

82 year old resident Patt Soo Har stated that despite multiple complaints, no repair work has been undertaken by the authorities.

She noted that the collapsed drain, which has been an issue since March, is merely covered up with a layer of canvas.

“The drain problem has been ongoing since around March or April. I have reported it to the Ipoh City Council (MBI), but no repairs have been made.

“They only came to cover the collapsed area with canvas, and as we approach the end of the year, there has been no repair work.

“When it rains heavily, water does not flow properly in the collapsed drain, pooling in one area and creating a mosquito problem.

“There have been dengue cases among residents here three times. I am very disappointed with this situation,” she said, having lived there for nearly 30 years with her husband and children.

She further explained that the collapsed drain has also caused holes in the road, raising fears of sinkholes similar to those recently reported in Kuala Lumpur.

“MBI officials have come to inspect the drain, but they only placed a canvas over it, and there has been no further action.

“The road has developed many depressions, and I worry it is related to the collapsed drain, this poses a danger to residents and road users,” she said.

She added that she has also reported the issue to the DAP office in Ipoh, but no changes have occurred.

“I reported it to the DAP, and they said they would come, but there has been no feedback,” she said.

Her hope is that local authorities or those responsible will repair the drain to prevent further incidents.

“Mayor or whoever is in charge, please address the problems we are facing here.

“I am concerned about the holes in the road that prevent proper drainage, which could lead to more severe sinkhole incidents,” she said.
