In today’s digital age, where people are connected wirelessly both willingly and otherwise, few can claim they haven’t been affected by scams or, at the very least, encountered a scammer’s call, email, or link.
In response to the rise in online scam cases nationwide, Ipoh Parade, together with the Lions Club of Sunway Damansara Metro, Lions Club of Ipoh Host and Lions Club of Ipoh Dynamic, teamed up with PDRM Perak Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department to launch the “Say No to Scam” campaign last week. PDRM’s data shows a surge in cases, with losses exceeding RM 581 million recorded from January to June 2024, predominantly through scam calls and messages, underscoring the need for increased public awareness and swift reporting.
The Honourable Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) Ng Kong Soon, Head of Crime Prevention and Community Safety for PDRM Perak, officially launched the National Scam Response Center (NSRC) hotline awareness initiative at Ipoh Parade. Although the NSRC hotline was introduced two years ago, scammers continue to exploit technological advancements and the ease of digital access to target victims.
Ipoh Parade and the Lions Clubs are doing their part to raise awareness and remind the public to stay vigilant against these pervasive scammers, knowing what to do if they suspect they have been targeted.
“The NSRC hotline 997 should be used for reporting such cases, and acting quickly will greatly assist in tracing and investigation,” said SAC Ng.
Also present were the 1st Vice District Governor of the Lions Clubs District 308 B2, Tan Say Cheong; Immediate Past District Governor, Dr. Alan Thoo; and Ipoh Parade Senior Manager for Leasing Department, Sherlyn Too.
