Christmas Eve turned dramatic for residents of Taman Desa Tambun in Ipoh when a large tree fell outside Mr. A. Madhavan’s house.
The tree, weakened by days of scorching heat followed by heavy rain, collapsed late in the evening, landing heavily on Mr. Madhavan’s car.
While no one was injured, the damage to the car and the sheer size of the fallen tree left the family and neighbours worried about what to do next.
Despite it being a public holiday, help came swiftly.
At 8 a.m. on Christmas Day, Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh (MBI) responded promptly to the distress call. Three MBI trucks and a six-person team arrived on the scene.
In less than an hour, they had cleared the tree, restoring safety and access to the area.
Residents praised MBI for their efficiency and dedication, especially on a day typically reserved for celebration and rest.
While waiting for the authorities, neighbours rallied together to keep the area safe.
They cleared smaller branches, checked on each other, and supported Mr. Madhavan’s family. The incident showed how a community can come together to manage a crisis.
With heavy rains and unpredictable weather expected to continue into 2025, this incident serves as a reminder for residents to be vigilant about potential tree hazards and know the proper steps to take when faced with similar situations.
What to Do If a Tree Falls
If you encounter a fallen tree, here’s what you need to do:
1) Assess the Situation
Emergencies: If lives are in danger or property (like a car or house) is damaged, call the Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) immediately at 05-529 7444.
Non-emergencies: For fallen trees that don’t pose immediate danger or damage, contact MBI at 05-5062088
2) Document the Incident
Take clear photos and videos of the tree, the damage, and the surrounding area. This evidence will be important for any claims you wish to make.
3) Make a Police Report
Visit the nearest police station to report the incident. A police report is required for filing claims.
4) Submit a Claim
File your compensation claim with MBI, attaching the police report and your photos as supporting documents. MBI will investigate your claim through their insurance partner.
Stay Safe and Be Prepared
Falling trees are a growing risk, especially during periods of heavy rain and storms. Older trees, those with hollow trunks, or those leaning significantly are more likely to fall. Residents are urged to inspect trees near their homes regularly and report potential hazards to MBI.
Proper maintenance, such as pruning and removal of dead or diseased trees, can help prevent accidents.
