E-Sports Championship

Malaysia’s first Northern Celcom Xpax E-Sports Championship was held at University Technology Petronas (UTP) from Friday, March 8 till Sunday, March 10.

Teams from the country’s institutions of higher learning participated in the event.

The closing ceremony, organised by Media Prima Digital through MyGameOn portal and Kitamen, was officiated by Assoc Professor Dr Nor Hisyam  Hamid, Vice Chancellor of Student Welfare and Alumni UTP along with Media Prima Digital Chief Executive Officer, Rafiq Razali.

Three popular games namely, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 and DOTA 2 were demonstrated.

The three-day championship saw 48 teams competing following the qualifying rounds in February.

The institution with the most number of victories will receive an RM50,000 scholarship from Celcom Xpax as an initiative to promote e-sports.

According to Rafiq Razali, the support received was excellent. The commitment shown by the main sponsors namely, Celcom Xpax and UTP is important in popularising e-sports in Malaysia. It helps creates a healthy-gaming environment among students.

Danny Chew, the Chief Consumer and Home Business Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad felt the event fulfils their customers’ needs, especially e-sports enthusiasts.  It too provides a platform for players to sharpen their gaming skills.

Two notable commentators, Radzi “ikuto” Rahman and Adam “Spartanker’ Faiz were present to cover the games.

Visitors were given the opportunity to experience other e-games such as Beat Saber and F1 Racing Simulator.

Besides the main event, other activities organised were education booths, a meet-and-greet session with the gamers, fitness sessions and lucky draws specifically for Celcom Xpax customers.

Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports Development, Howard Lee, was the guest of honour.
