PPCS (Perak Palliative Care Society) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization which provides palliative care to terminally ill cancer patients. It was registered with the Registrar of Societies on 23 Feb 1995 and managed by 13 committee members who are all volunteers. Its primary service is the Home Care Program where its medical director and palliative care nurses make home visits to cancer patients to provide pain and symptom control with a focus on educating the carers, equipping them with the necessary skills so that patients are better cared for at home. Other than that, PPCS also runs a monthly Sunshine Program where patients are invited to the centre for activities and to mingle with other patients and volunteers. It is aimed to bring a change of environment and routine for the patients. It also allows the carers some respite from the burden of caring. Their volunteers also visit the Batu Gajah Palliative Care Unit bimonthly to bring joy to the patients there. Besides these services, PPCS also loans medical equipment free of charge (surgical bed, wheelchair, oxygen concentrator, ripple mattress, etc.) to needy patients.
To date, PPCS has provided much needed palliative care to more than 6,000 patients. Presently, they are serving 200 patients on average monthly, and the majority of the RM45,000 monthly expenditure is salary for the medical team. Their services are provided free regardless of age, race or religion and PPCS relies mainly on public donations to cover its operating expenses. Hence, the initiative for this fundraising concert.
